Rockbox™ originates from a Box drum, also commonly known as a Cajon.
Typically made from timber, these wooden drums are found extensivley throughout Cuba, Peru and Spain.
The Cajon is the favoured percussive instrument for Flamenco and also peruvian music.

Unlike the traditional cajon, Rockbox™ drums are specifically designed for and suited to Rock, Blues, Funk, Boogie, Techno, Rap, World Music, Electronic and even Jazz in an unplugged or lightly amplified enviroment.
They're excellent for jamming, and perfomances in small venues such as cafes, restaurants etc.
Our "Youtube" page you can compare video footage of our Rockbox with other popular brands of traditional cajons.

The acoustic characteristics of the Rockbox™ offer a rich soft deep base tone, along with a bright crispy snare, the perfect sound for the above mentioned music genres.

The Rockbox™ is made from specific timbers and dimensions to produce a sound similar to that of a drum kit... minus the cymbals, which can be an add on.
All Rockboxes are hand made with love and precision and individually tuned to achieve that characteristic Rockbox funky sound.
The Rockbox™ has a fixed position snare within, which is reinforced at opposite ends by timber framing to strengthen and secure it.
The Rockbox™ has a total of just 6 screws used in it's manufacture, 4 to attach the non-slip feet, the other 2 attaching the metal snare to the bridge, spanning the width of the drum.
The timber sides of the Rockbox™ are attached to the top and bottom by means of a rebate joint and glued.
There is vertical and also lateral bracing within the Rockbox™ for additional strength.
Additional vertical bracing along with extra centrally positiond feet can be built in for drummers 100 kg plus in weight.
The thin timber skin front (which acts as a type of diaphragm) and back of the box where the sound hole is positioned are typically butt joined, glued and sometimes also braced internally to reinforce the drum.
Click on the below video to see an Australian Ironbark Rockbox in action.
This particular drum is made with solid Ironbark top and base, Kauri pine sides and back, with a cedar ply front.
The below video was filmed impulsively out front of my workshop at Manly Australia..... warts and all, the sound has not been digitally enhanced, you can tell by the voices and traffic noise which was literally right next to us whilst filming.
The video is actually a great example of how well the Rockbox ™ projects it's sound over all the street noise, The street being about 5 metres away.
I filmed Dave Robins Drumming , this is his first play on a Rockbox , during the session I adjust the tone
and also tested out the Stompboard.
